A Journey to Transforming Mathematics Education

The owner of Math Me Up is a local young entrepreneur operating a dynamic tutoring business in Victoria West

Meet Funalwazi Haarvoor, a passionate and driven entrepreneur making waves in Victoria West through his mathematics tutoring business, Math ME UP. What began as informal extra lessons from his home in 2022 has grown into a thriving enterprise, transforming the way students engage with mathematics – and achieving markedly remarkable results along the way.

Funalwazi’s journey began when he recognised a critical need for mathematics tuition in his community. In June 2023, he was offered the opportunity to teach at Victoria West Hoërskool and Victoria West Gekombineerde Skool as a substitute mathematics teacher. Over two terms, Funalwazi’s dedication and innovative teaching methods led to extraordinary improvements in student performance. Grade 8 pass rates, which were below 10%, soared to 84%, while Grades 10–12 achieved an impressive 100% pass rate by the end of 2023.

This success was the catalyst Funalwazi needed to take his vision to the next level. In November 2023, he officially registered his business, Math ME UP, and began offering structured mathematics tutoring to learners in his community. Since then, he has seen firsthand the transformative impact of his work – not only on individual learners but also on the overall classroom dynamic.

However, Funalwazi’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. One of his biggest hurdles is ensuring that all learners who need his services can access them. While his tuition fees are affordable at just R250 per month, many families in the community struggle to afford even this modest amount. Despite this, Funalwazi remains committed to his mission, constantly seeking ways to support under-resourced learners and expand his reach.

In April 2024, Funalwazi was selected to participate in the Noblesfontein Wind Farm SMME Enterprise4Change Grant Funding & Mentoring Programme, facilitated by Angels Resource Centres. This 12-month programme provides critical training and support to help small businesses like Math ME UP grow and thrive. Through Hive Mind group training and one-on-one mentoring sessions, Funalwazi has been able to identify and address key challenges, such as securing suitable teaching venues and finding sponsorships for learners in need.

The programme has also encouraged Funalwazi to think innovatively about the future of his business. Recognising the importance of technology in education, he planned to start recording his lessons so that learners can revisit and revise the material at their own pace. Additionally, Math ME UP has recently employed a tutoring assistant and is exploring opportunities to expand into neighbouring areas like Richmond, Beaufort West, and Carnarvon.

As a result, Funalwazi’s efforts have already gained recognition beyond Victoria West. The business is expanding by building relationships with key stakeholders, including the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which has expressed interest in appointing Math ME UP to provide mathematics tuition to learners in Carnarvon. This partnership marked a significant milestone for the business, allowing it the opportunity to make a lasting impact in the region.

Funalwazi’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and community-focused entrepreneurship. His dedication to improving mathematics education and making it fun and accessible for local youth, is not only changing individual lives but also contributing to the broader development and success of his community.

The Angels Resource Centres team is proud to have been part of the journey with this young entrepreneur, seeing him grow in confidence with the mentoring, business skills and asset funding support provided throughout the programme. We congratulate Funalwazi on successfully completing the business mentoring programme and applaud him for his hard work with developing his company, Math ME UP,  and for investing in the youth of Victoria West, by providing excellent mathematics tuition.

We look forward to seeing this inspiring business soar to new heights, as they continue to grow and make a difference!
